Start with the frame
Wayfarer, Aviator and Zena differ in shape and feel. Meta lists 27 colour-and-lens combinations, not 27 separate silhouettes. A product image cannot tell you how the bridge, size and temples will sit on your face.
The improvements you notice
The official specifications include a 12 MP camera, video up to 3K, six microphones and up to nine hours of battery life depending on use. The frame is slimmer and the action button configurable. In our first trial, the audio improvement was clear, with a more immersive feel; voice and calls also impressed us more. It feels much closer to an everyday product.
Pick lenses for your routine
If you spend hours outdoors, sun, polarized or photochromic lenses may matter as much as the camera. Availability varies by frame. Clear stock lenses are not automatically prescription lenses: confirm the exact reference and optical fitting if you need correction. After exposure to sand or sea spray, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
Be realistic about AI availability
New AI functions can depend on country, language and future updates. We are excited by the direction, but would not buy for one promised function without checking whether it is available where you live.

Imagine leaving home in bright sunlight, stepping into a café, walking by the coast and taking a call without finding your earbuds. Smart glasses can feel natural in that sequence. It also becomes clear whether your lenses are too dark indoors or the frame moves as you walk. That is why our first question is not about megapixels: it is where and how long you will wear the glasses.
In our first hands-on experience, sound felt fuller and more immersive, while calls and voice commands made a better impression. The slimmer frame also feels less like a gadget. These are observations, not laboratory measurements: we have not timed a whole day of battery life in sun, wind and calls, or tried every available lens combination.
The lenses can change the whole experience
In a sunny archipelago it is tempting to choose the darkest lenses. Someone who constantly moves between outdoors and indoors may want something else; a driver or a person who spends hours outside will have different priorities again. Sun, polarized and photochromic are not interchangeable terms, and treatments vary by exact reference. Check the specific lens category and suitability for driving rather than assuming them from a Wayfarer, Aviator or Zena frame.
If you need vision correction, do not confuse clear display lenses with prescription lenses. Wearing Gen 3 throughout the day only makes sense if you can see comfortably. Confirm the prescription, exact frame compatibility, fitting and final adjustment before ordering. There is no one configuration that fits every face or every prescription.
Camera, voice and consideration for others
The 12 MP camera and video up to 3K make it easier to keep a scene from your own perspective. They do not turn every walk into a filming session: for carefully composed photography a phone can still be the more deliberate tool. A capture LED alerts other people. In cafés, shops and private spaces, common sense and permission matter as much as the technology.
Meta specifies six microphones and strong background-noise reduction. We noticed improvements to sound and voice in our initial trial; we still want to compare longer calls in real wind before making a stronger claim. Specifications start a review, but they do not finish it.
Sun, sea air and sensible care
These are not underwater cameras or something to leave on the sand. After sea spray or a beach visit, follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance and make sure the charging areas are dry and free of residue before putting the glasses in their case. We would also avoid unnecessary heat exposure inside a parked car. Simple habits protect both the lenses and the electronics.
Treat the charging case as part of your day. Meta's up-to-nine-hour figure changes with the mix of music, calls, recording and voice use. If you will be out for hours, take the case rather than reading the official maximum as a fixed duration. Before buying for a newly announced AI function, confirm that it works in your location and language.
How we would choose one
Start by ruling out shapes that do not sit comfortably. Next choose the lenses you will genuinely use, and only then the finish. Wayfarer continues a classic, Aviator changes the silhouette and Zena makes a stronger statement; none is universally best. If you are torn between two, a fitting or a comparison with the measurements of your current glasses is worth more than another list of shared functions.
Our first conclusion is encouraging but specific: sound, comfort and voice make Gen 3 feel more like an everyday product. Fit and the right lenses still make or break the purchase. If you do not want a camera, Meta Audio is a separate family, not a Gen 3 colourway.
